Progressions of the multiple layers that come together in a simple object reflect the complexity of our daily cultural experiences. I analyze every situation with-in my own mind. Visually, I instinctively break down everything I see into its preliminary layers. In my approach to art I visualize the internal structure and all the integral coats of material that come together to create its final appearance. Whether painting or sculpting, my process begins with the challenge of breaking down an object or image into its basic components. I work out an artistic formula that helps me determine where and when each component will be applied or left out. Working from all visual angles, I then create a surface that is consistent regardless of the position from which the piece is viewed. Working in acrylic glazes, I bounce back and forth between transparent and opaque washes. This gives my paintings a wide range of depth. Using an oil blending technique as well as dry-on-dry application, the image takes on a personality all its own.

I have recently been working on a series of abstract “colour field” paintings that showcase my selective component-based, multi-layering approach..
